Enid's Own Marquis James

(1891-1955)

Marquis James came to Enid at the age of 2 with his parents in 1893.  His parents made the Cherokee Strip Land Run.  He grew up in Enid, Oklahoma, witnessing and experiencing the growth of that young prairie city.  James would leave Enid after high school to pursue a journalistic career.  He would go on to write two Pulitzer Price winning books and was acclaimed as a historical writer.  In 1945, he published his boyhood memories of Enid.  "The Cherokee Strip: A Tale of an Oklahoma Boyhood" at the time of its publication was acclaimed as one of the outstanding local history volumes in American literature.  This Web Page is dedicated to the life and works of Marquis James, Enid's greatest "favorite son."
