Do You Know???

Local history is very fragile. Many pieces of information about the community that people assume is readily available gets lost in a very quick period of time. An example is the origin of how the City of Enid was named. In the early 1930's, Cherokee Strip pioneer and local historian, George Rainey, was writing the history of the Cherokee Outlet and wanted to include this piece of information. At that time there were over a half a dozen stories told by locals as to the origin of the name, each swearing to the validity of their story. This was incredible given the fact that it was known that the name had only come into existence less that 40 years prior. The story of Rainey’s search and discovery of the true origin of how Enid received its name is a topic of a future article.

We are currently researching several pieces of Enid history. If anyone has any information as to the following topics, we would appreciate hearing from you at gary@brownlaw-ok.com. Also, if you have some questions about Enid’s history please let us know and we will try to point you in the right direction.
